Built-On-Site vs. Prebuilt Sheds: Which Is Better?

Most people shopping for a shed focus first on size, style and price. One other decision can affect the entire project: should the shed arrive fully assembled, or should it be built directly on the property?

Both approaches can produce a useful shed. The better choice depends on access, property conditions, desired options, scheduling and how clearly the total installed cost is presented.

What is a prebuilt shed?

A prebuilt shed is generally assembled at a manufacturing location or sales lot and transported to the customer’s property as a completed building. This can make installation fast when the delivery route is wide, level and unobstructed.

What is a built-on-site shed?

A built-on-site shed is constructed at its final location. Materials and components are brought onto the property, and the building is assembled where it will remain. Eastern Connecticut Sheds specializes in this approach.

Backyard access

Access is one of the biggest differences. A fully assembled shed may require room for a truck, trailer or specialized placement equipment. Fences, narrow side yards, trees, septic systems, slopes and overhead wires can complicate delivery.

Building on-site can work well when a completed structure cannot easily travel from the road to the desired location. Materials can often be carried through spaces where an entire shed could not pass.

Transportation and handling

Prebuilt sheds are designed to be transported, and experienced companies use specialized equipment. Even so, the finished structure must be loaded, carried over roads and maneuvered across the property. On-site construction avoids transporting the completed building.

Customization

Both types can offer customization, but buyers should verify which changes are available and when they must be selected. With an on-site build, door placement, windows, lofts, ramps, wall height, paint and other options are discussed before construction and included in the written quote.

Installation and leveling

Ask every shed company what the advertised price includes. Delivery, foundation preparation, installation, leveling and access charges may be separate. Eastern Connecticut Sheds includes delivery, on-site construction, installation and basic leveling with block supports in its published prices.

Quality depends on materials and workmanship

A shed is not automatically better because it is prebuilt or built on-site. Compare floor framing, joist size and spacing, siding, trim, roofing, doors, windows and fastening methods. Eastern Connecticut Sheds uses pressure-treated 2×6 floor framing, LP SmartSide siding, PVC trim and 30-year architectural shingles.

Which option is right for you?

A prebuilt shed may work well when the customer wants an in-stock building and the property offers clear delivery access. A built-on-site shed may be the stronger choice when access is restricted, the customer wants specific options, or avoiding transport of the completed building is important.

Questions to ask before buying

Ask for the complete installed price, what site preparation is required, how the shed will reach the backyard, which materials are standard, what options cost, how long scheduling takes and what responsibilities belong to the homeowner.

If you are considering a shed in Eastern Connecticut, Eastern Connecticut Sheds can review your size, town, access and options and provide a free written quote.
